Elision in Latin refers to the omission of a vowel or syllable at the end of a word when the next word begins with a vowel or h. This is a common feature in Latin poetry and helps to maintain the rhythm and meter of the verse. Elision is indicated in Latin texts by a line or mark over the omitted vowel or syllable. It is important for students of Latin poetry to be able to recognize and understand elision in order to properly scan and interpret the meter of the verse. **

Elision in Latin meter can be applied by omitting a vowel or syllable at the end of a word when the next word begins with a vowel or h. This creates a smoother and more natural flow of the meter. For example, in the line "arma virumque cano" from Virgil's Aeneid, the final -a in "arma" is elided before the following word "virum" to create a more fluid rhythm. Elision is an important technique in Latin poetry and is used to maintain the proper meter and enhance the musicality of the verse. **

When scanning in Latin, one can recognize an aphaeresis-elision by looking for the omission of a vowel or syllable at the beginning of a word, followed by the merging of the remaining vowel or syllable with the following word. This often results in the contraction of two words into one, such as "nec" becoming "neque" or "in" becoming "im." Additionally, one can identify an aphaeresis-elision by paying attention to the meter and rhythm of the verse, as these contractions often occur to maintain the proper metrical pattern in Latin poetry. **

Elision is the omission of a sound or syllable in speech, while apocope is the loss of a sound or syllable at the end of a word. In elision, a sound is typically omitted for the sake of ease of pronunciation or to maintain the rhythm of speech, while apocope occurs as a natural phonological process in language evolution. Both elision and apocope can result in changes to the pronunciation and spelling of words, and they are important concepts in the study of phonetics and historical linguistics. **
